Cut Paper Clouds

by Rhiannon Leonard

Do you look up into the sky and see more shapes than just clouds? Me too! Sometimes I see flowers, fish, and elephants up there! What do you see in this photo?

Learning Target

● I can use abstract and realistic shapes to create my own paper sky.

Materials

● Colored Paper
● Scissors
● Pencil
● Glue Stick
● Extra Paper

Instructions

An Abstract shape is a form with no name:

Abstract art by Giovani 12 yrs. old

A Realistic shape is a form with a name… like a butterfly!

Realistic tree painting by Julian, 8 yrs. old

1. THE SKY:
Turn colored paper 1 vertical.

2. THE GROUND:
Tear the short end off of colored paper 2. Glue to the bottom of paper 1.

3. THE CLOUDS:

A. Practice drawing clouds. Sketch 5 abstract clouds and five realistic clouds on your extra paper. Keep it simple. This is practice so don’t worry if they all turn out like abstract blobs. Abstract blobs are easier to cut out!

B. Redraw the clouds on Paper 3.

C. Cut out clouds and arrange on the sky.

The plant and the flower were too detailed to cutout.

D. GLUE CLOUD
Glue pencil mark side to hide any drawing marks. Put the extra paper under your cloud, so your table won’t end up sticky

Congratulations! Clean up your work space, recycle extra paper, and put your supplies away.

Reflection

Write or Draw in your journal or sketchbook

● Share your cut paper clouds with someone! What abstract or realistic shapes do they see?
● Name your clouds and have them tell their adventure story.
● Count the clouds you see outside. How many are abstract? How many have realistic shapes?
